Saltstraumen / Bodø – visit the fastest tidal current in the world!
Fishing at the Saltstraumen
The Saltstraumen is the fastest tidal current in the world. It is located about 10 km southeast of Bodø – just under 100 km above the Arctic Circle. Because of a shorter traveling time and lower transfer costs (no ferry with corresponding waiting times required) this destination is an interesting alternative to Lofoten.
Here the world record was set incolafish fishing. The record Coalfish / Saithe weighed 22,7 kg / 50 Lbs!
For our guests, we have a top facility on Saltstraumen:
Saltstraumen Brygge is perfect for an ideal fishing vacation and is open all year round. It is a fishing camp with all imaginable comfort and a reliable management. In 2016/2017, the resort was extended by several apartments. These accommodations offer every imaginable comfort and complys to high requirements.
Climate & travel times
The average of high temperatures in July is round about 13 °C. In January, the average of high temperatures is -3 °C. The least rainfall occurs from April to June – most of the rain falls during September and October.
However, extreme temperatures should be expected in any season, temperatures over 30 °C in summer and below -30 °C in winter are within the range of the possible.
Particularly noteworthy is the protected location in the interior, behind the coastal mountains. Even in spring or autumn, if, for example, the storm is raging on the Lofoten, you can sometimes go for a leisurely fishing trip, and heavy waves are very rare.
The Saltstraumen
The area around the Saltstrom Bridge is one of the best northern fishing grounds. Every 6 hours, the water squeezes itself through the approximately 150 m wide strait between the Kalten- and the Skjerstadfjord at a speed of up to 40 km / h – 25 mph. The resulting whirlpools have a diameter of up to 10 m and can reach up to 5 m in depth.
The tremendous current is, similar to the famous “Moskstraumen” at the Lofoten, the cause of the enormous amount of different, and particularly large fish, for example, Coalfish Cod, Wolffish, Pollack and Halibut.

Fishing Tip: Equipment
Pilking with powerful equipment is the classic method of success. Often the size of the occurring fish, especially cod and coalfish, underestimated. Therefore your equipment should be very stable. We recommend fishing rods of 30 Lbs up and to use leaders about 0.80 mm.
On your strong multiper reel you should have a 0,30 – 0,35 mm braided line with a load capacity of min. 30 kg / 65 Lbs. In general, pilks round about 200 – 500 grams / 1 Lbs areto be used.
An excellent alternative to the to pilks are rubber fish of various types and sizes. Ideal for really big cod and of course especially for halibut with weights between 150 – 500 grams / 0,2 – 1 Lbs.
