Maelstrom / Lofoten – Anglers dreams become reality!
Fishing at Maelstrom / Å Lofoten
The watercourse near Lofoten, especially the Vestfjord and the Maelstrom, can undoubtedly be described as the dream of every angler. Here exists a richness in fish that is realy fabules. There are only a few regions on earth comparable to this area. Giant cod or coalfish swarms are forming the basis of the famous Lofot fishery.
A fishing holiday in the far north wants to be well planned, so that everything runs smoothly and the angler can say satisfied: “That was just as I imagined. Everything was perfect!” That is why the quality and the associated service are at the forefront of “Nordmeer Angelreisen”. We are there to help and advise you throughout your stay.
The climate of Lofoten islands
The unique climate of southwestern Lofoten is depending on the Gulf Stream, which constantly transports a gigantic amount of warm water to this region, thus ensuring an almost Central European climate.
In winter, temperatures are mostly 0° C to + 10 °C, and a strong, often swelling to hurricane wind brings enormous rainfall, as snow or rain.
In summer it can be pleasantly warm. From June temperatures above 20 °C are possible and one can get the impression of being on an island in the Mediterranean and not 300 km north of the Arctic Circle.
The will be no sunsets in Lofoten in the period from 28 May to 15 July – the sun shines around the clock during this period.
The infamous Maelstrom
In front of the southern tip of the Lofoten island of Moskenesøy, in the immediate vicinity of Å, the notorious “Maelstrom” is situated. He is known as the strongest tidal currents in the world.
Across the 4 to 5 kilometers wide and only 40 to 60 meters deep strait, the current of water from the North Atlantic Ocean pours into the Vestfjord when the tidesare changeing. It can form tremendous swirls and rapids and push huge amounts of nutrients into the Vestfjord. Thus, this region is not only one of the most dangerous, but also one of the richest fishing grounds in the world.
Stay in the fishing village Å
We are looking forward to advise you on a vacation that suits your wishes – even beyond the fishing, for example hiking tours, museum tours or other activities.

Fishing Tip: Equipment
Pilking with powerful equipment is the classic method of success. Often the size of the occurring fish, especially cod and coalfish, underestimated. Therefore your equipment should be very stable. We recommend fishing rods of 30 Lbs up and to use leaders about 0.80 mm.
On your strong multiper reel you should have a 0,30 – 0,35 mm braided line with a load capacity of min. 30 kg / 65 Lbs. In general, pilks round about 200 – 500 grams / 1 Lbs areto be used.
An excellent alternative to the to pilks are rubber fish of various types and sizes. Ideal for really big cod and of course especially for halibut with weights between 150 – 500 grams / 0,2 – 1 Lbs.
